The French company Ubisoft decided to use the experience of its Quebec branch gained during the creation of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and therefore gave the green light to a project called Immortals Fenyx Rising based on Greek mythology. The action-adventure title, initially called Gods & Monsters, relies on a colourful presentation and fantasy environment based on ancient myths.
Updated on 22. November – Added new information about revealed plans on game extensions via DLC
The action-adventure Immortals Fenyx Rising will take you to an ambience of Greek myths and legends, in which you will take on a hero (or heroine) named Fenyx to help the Olympic gods against a titan called Typhon. This demonic villain occupied the Golden Island, which serves as the home of divine beings, and flooded it with its monsters, which plague the diverse regions dedicated to the most famous celestials. By gradually liberating the locations, it will be possible to incline the gods on your side and they will lend you some of their qualities or artefacts in return.
The gameplay will be based on traditional Ubisoft principles – an entertaining combat system spiced with superhuman skills of the main character, exploring a diverse world, and in addition, you will encounter a number of differently challenging puzzles. Thanks to its colourful jacket and fantasy touch, Immortals Fenyx Rising could become a dark horse at the end of the year when the release is currently planned.
Immortals Fenyx Rising: Reviews, previews and impressions from the game
The creators of the Ubisoft Québec studio introduced several official gameplays during 2020, from which we can get a clear idea of how Immortals Fenyx Rising will be played. In addition, selected journalists were given the opportunity to immerse themselves in Fenyx’s adventure for a few hours, so that they could bring their own impressions of playing, which you can read about in more detail in our article.
Immortals Fenyx Rising: Date of issue, platforms, edition
Immortals Fenyx Rising was originally scheduled to be released in early 2020, but in the end, due to internal problems at Ubisoft, its launch was postponed until December 3. The release of the antique carving is being prepared for PC (Uplay, Epic Store), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X / S and Switch. It will also be available on the Google Stadia streaming service, with which Ubisoft has been cooperating for a long time.
Ubisoft does not plan to release Immortals Fenyx Rising in any boosted collector’s edition containing physical artefacts, but enthusiasts can invest in the so-called Shadowmaster Edition, in which they will receive themed items based on the underworld ruler Hades. There will also be a Gold Edition, which will include Season Pass and other epic in-game items to such as Orion’s armour or rainbow wings.
Immortals Fenyx Rising: The Story
The basic idea of the Immortals Fenyx Rising story is a duel between the young hero Fenyx, whom the Greek gods chose as their champion (and saviour) against the titan Typhon, who began to terrorize the Golden Island, the homeland of the Olympians. Gradually, we will get acquainted with the most famous figures of the ancient pantheon, such as Zeus, Prometheus, Aphrodite, Athena, Ares, Hermes and others, who will help us in the fight against mythical monsters serving the central villain.
During inventing the fictional story, the developers used their knowledge gained in the study of realities to create Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, while significantly unleashing their imagination. During the epic adventure, we come across many references associated with Greek myths and legends. Connections with demigods (Heracles, Odysseus) and the most famous monsters (Jellyfish, Harpies, Minotaur) should appear.
Immortals Fenyx Rising: Gameplay
The game principles of Immortals Fenyx Rising are based on an action-adventure basis, adjusting equipment (thus changing Fenyx statistics), solving spatial puzzles and free movement on an open map of the Golden Island. There will be many who will claim that Fenyx’s adventures blindly copy the mechanics of the switch exclusivity The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which the creators refer to as their inspiration.
The basis of the gameplay should be a quality experience of threshing fights with various monsters, against which you will use a number of divine abilities. The core of the combat system is the principles taken from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which the authors of Immortals Fenyx Rising spiced up with fantasy elements. Superhuman skills will also need to be used when moving around the landscape (on Daidal’s wings or on the back of various animals) or in solving various puzzles, in which we find the principles of Metroidvania, ie a need to learn some magical ability to successfully solve them. You can find out more about the gameplay in our article.
Immortals Fenyx Rising: Game world, range and length of play
While playing Immortals Fenyx Rising, we gradually work our way through the entire Golden Island, which consists of seven regions dedicated to the most important gods of the Greek pantheon. Each of them has its own specific form, attributes and properties, so, for example, Hephaestus’s main scenery will be factories and mechanical machines, while with Aphrodite we will enjoy a romantic and colourful landscape. In each region, we find a number of hidden places that Fenyx discovers using expanding skills (Metroidvania approach), puzzles and other interesting locations revealing the secrets of the island.
Based on the official gameplay and other reports from the developers, it can be assumed that the basic story of Immortals Fenyx Rising will be possible to conquer in 20+ hours, but if you want to discover all the mysteries of the divine homeland, the game time may double (as we have seen with some of the new Assassin’s Creed series).
Immortals Fenyx Rising: Multiplayer
The creators have not yet indicated that they would implement multiplayer elements into Immortals Fenyx Rising in any way. The title looks like a strong single-player story, similar to the new episodes in the Assassin’s Creed series, so we don’t expect multiplayer support on Fenyx’s quest against Typhon either unless there would be some kind of special battleground map update in future, just for this case.
Immortals Fenyx Rising: Season Pass, DLC, updates
Ubisoft has revealed its plans to add more content to Immortals Fenyx Rising. Like the Assassin’s Creed series, will be in a form of story DLCs that will be a part of the Season Pass included in the Gold Edition and higher collector’s editions. Although we don’t have more information about their exact release date, the developers have revealed the contents of the three individual large additions. In the first of them, A New God, we get with the hero to Olympus mountain itself, on which we will try to settle.
The second DLC Myths of Eastern Realm takes us to Chinese mythology, where we meet a new hero named Ku. Outside the new world, we can look forward to seeing yet undiscovered exotic monsters and unique Eastern culture. We also recognize another character in the third DLC, The Lost Gods, in which the hero Ash, chosen by Fenyx, will take us through the story. In addition to the new storyline, we will also get a different style of play. The Lost Gods was conceived by the creators as an isometric battle in the style of Diablo, so we get to know the mythological world from another perspective.
