Apple has announced a plethora of new Apple Watches including the Apple Watch Series 9 and the Apple Watch Ultra 2. It’s clear that Apple Watch enthusiasts will have plenty to choose from this year. While watching the “Wonderlust” event online, I noticed a common theme among the software updates that Apple is bringing to the Apple Watch.
This year, Apple is focusing on connectivity, with features that allow you to better connect with your health, your other Apple devices, and people around you. One of these new features is called NameDrop.
What Exactly is NameDrop and How Will It Work?
If you’re an Apple Watch user, you can now share your contact information easily and discreetly using NameDrop. This new feature operates similarly to AirDrop, allowing you to quickly exchange files or send photos.
With NameDrop, you no longer have to manually enter phone numbers or hand over your phone to someone just to add their contact details. At a recent event, Apple demonstrated how two people can simply place their watches near each other to swap contact information, thanks to the advanced S9 chip.
When or how to get NameDrop?
If you’re hoping to use NameDrop on your Apple Watch, you may have to wait a bit longer. While the feature was announced with WatchOS 10, it appears that it won’t be available until later this year, according to Apple’s breakdown of both WatchOS 10 and iOS 17.
Nevertheless, it’s a smart move to update your watch to WatchOS 10 in preparation for the NameDrop release.
Can I use NameDroponly with iPhone?
For those who are using an iPhone, they can take advantage of the NameDrop feature with the upcoming iOS 17. This latest version of iOS will be available starting Monday, September 18th, and will have the NameDrop functionality.
Once you have the iOS 17 on your iPhone, you can quickly exchange contacts with other iPhone users who have the same software version. Additionally, NameDrop will also be compatible with Apple Watch users in the future.
How does actually the NameDrop feature work?
According to Apple, NameDrop is a new way to use AirDrop where users can share their contact information with only the intended recipient by holding their iPhone near another.
Apple has also ensured that users can select what information they want to share via NameDrop. Additionally, Apple Watch users can use NameDrop by tapping the My Card watch face complication and bringing their watch face to someone else’s Apple Watch.
We will provide more information as it becomes available. If you’re interested in learning more, you can check out the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, and the release dates for all Apple OS updates.
