After weeks of leaked information that Spotify will hike its subscription prices, the company has finally released a statement regarding the price increase.

The change will mainly affect the US, the UK and the European market, although there will be some differences.

In the US, Spotify is increasing the premium subscription on its Spotify Family plan from $14.99 to $15.99 per month. For the time being, the Duo, Premium and Student plan prices will remain the same.

The upcoming change will, however, be more noticeable in the UK and Europe, where more plans will see the higher prices.

In the UK, the Spotify Student will now be available for £5.99 – up from £4.99 and the Spotify Duo (2 accounts) will rised from £12.99 to £13.99. The change will see also users in the Spotify Family (6 accounts) subscription with the price change from £14.99 to £16.99 per month.

In European countries, the change will be very similar to the one in the UK, increasing the Student and Duo plans by 1€ to €5.99 and €12.99 per month as well as Spotify Family plan increasing from €14.99 to €17.99. It has been said that even some countries in Asia and South America will see the prices rise in a similar way.

If you are currently an existing Spotify subscriber, you will receive a one-month grace period after which your prices will automatically increase, unless you unsubscribe.

One of the reasons why Spotify has resorted to this decision might be the recent reports that in spite of having over 158 million subscribers the company is still at a loss of €125 million.

Spotify is currently available in 178 countries all around the world with over 356 million active users (paying+non-paying) and has paid over 21 billion euros to the rightsholders for the listed 70 million songs since its launch.
